SUMMARY:Tauranga Woodcrafters' Turners Group
DESCRIPTION:Our Turners Group meets each month on the 1st Tuesday of the month at 9:30am & 1:30pm and the 4th Wednesday of the month at 9:30am at the Guild’s Workshop. Our Turning Group meetings combine hands-on learning sessions with one on one instruction in the mornings followed by a group project and critique in the afternoons. \nExperienced members work with new turners to develop skills and to build people’s confidence in using the equipment correctly. \nOur workshop is well equipped with lathes. New members can use a good selection of turning chisels and scrapers which are owned by the club until they build their skills and begin to buy their own equipment. \nThe Turning Group build members skills by setting a monthly project and then having an experienced turner critique each members contribution at the following meeting. Their objective is to explore new ideas and to improve. \nWebsite: http://taurangawoodcrafters.org/turners/ \n \nOther woodcrafting groups operate as well. \nThe Tauranga Woodcrafters have monthly meetings for our different interest groups at the workshop. Open Workshop (covering all areas of woodworking interest) meet on 2nd & 4th Wednesday’s at 6:30pm and 2nd & 4th Saturdays at 9:30am. Learn all the basic clay and wheel techniques and get to know the necessary pottery tools and equipment to perfect the craft!\n\nEach week Sophie will demonstrate different techniques on and off the wheel – from storage and wedging to turning and pulling cups\, bowls\, plates\, handles and spouts! Once participants have a range of pieces they’re happy with\, Sophie will introduce students to the glazing and firing process.\n\nAt the end of the series\, the last week will be a gathering for participants to debrief and exhibit their work to their friends and family!\n\nSpaces are limited\, so get in quick!\n\nSophie Evans\, a past resident artist of the Pot House\, here at the Incubator\, is both a hand sculpting and wheel throwing potter and tutor. You can find her work on display and for sale in the Pot House. She says – ‘I have enjoyed clay for as long as I can remember. I have played around with different mediums\, but nothing has captivated me as much as clay. I went to Whitecliffe Art School\, where I studied for a Diploma in Art and Design. During this time at Whitecliffe\, we explored clay and I expressed how much I would love to work in ceramics. I spent four years working towards my Ceramic Diploma in the Waikato. Learn all the basic clay and wheel techniques and get to know the necessary pottery tools and equipment to perfect the craft!\n\nEach week Sophie will demonstrate different techniques on and off the wheel – from storage and wedging to turning and pulling cups\, bowls\, plates\, handles and spouts! Once participants have a range of pieces they’re happy with\, Sophie will introduce students to the glazing and firing process.\n\nAt the end of the series\, the last week will be a gathering for participants to debrief and exhibit their work to their friends and family!\n\nSpaces are limited\, so get in quick!\n\nSophie Evans\, a past resident artist of the Pot House\, here at the Incubator\, is both a hand sculpting and wheel throwing potter and tutor. You can find her work on display and for sale in the Pot House. She says – ‘I have enjoyed clay for as long as I can remember. I have played around with different mediums\, but nothing has captivated me as much as clay. I went to Whitecliffe Art School\, where I studied for a Diploma in Art and Design. During this time at Whitecliffe\, we explored clay and I expressed how much I would love to work in ceramics. I spent four years working towards my Ceramic Diploma in the Waikato.
