DESCRIPTION:“He kitenga kanohi\, he hokinga mahara”\n“to see a familiar face is to stir the memory”\nThe same can be said with special items of clothing such as a favourite pounamu worn by your kuia or a coat worn by koro.\nThis year during our Matariki celebration we have an opportunity for whānau that will awaken the nostalgia of your whakapapa.\nIf you have various cultural taonga such as kākahu\, korowai\, medals\, kilts\, clogs\, sari or even Koro’s hat that you’d like to be photographed wearing we would love to help you create and re-create magical moments.\nBeing photographed cloaked in the memories of your whānau suited up in the armour of taonga and kākahu that were once adorned or lovingly made by your whānau will have you feeling empowered and connected.\nThe mauri and wairua of your whānau heirlooms will be encapsulated giving you the opportunity to celebrate and share these treasures for years to come.\nWe have a beautiful range of clothing and items to style you on the day as well.\nWe have an amazing professional team that passionate and excited\, and have put this opportunity together special for Matariki this year.\nBookings are essential. Portrait sessions will take place 9am – 4pm\, Sunday 26th June. Prices start at $150 for an individual\, plus $50 for each additional participant. Professional makeup is available for an extra $50 per person as well as\, moko kauae stamp for an extra $15.\nWhen you make your booking select your time slot and add one Participant for each person that will be in the portrait. For example\, if you want to do a solo portrait\, add selected time slot and add one Participant. If you want a whanau of six\, add selected time slot and add six Participants\, plus however many moko kauae and makeup applications you would like.\nEach individual or group will receive 1 edited image per person\, plus two more. Each individual or group can choose who they would like in each photo. A whanau might like to have an individual portrait each plus one of the whole whanau\, plus one with just the kids. DESCRIPTION:This is a subsidised workshop in The Incubator’s Matariki series. You can only book into one subsidised workshop\, so choose carefully! Bookings for all full price workshops are also open\, and you may book into as many of those as you wish.\nThis is an introductory workshop and a contemporary take on the traditional Maori art form of tukutuku. In this introductory workshop we hope to inspire you to get weaving and tell your story through tukutuku.\n\nTukutuku are found in Wharenui (meeting house). The walls are adorned with Tukutuku panels each telling stories of our ancestors. \n\nTutor: Ngawaiata Sellars\nWhat: Story Telling through Tukutuku\nDate: Wednesday\, 15th June\nTime: 6.30 pm to 8.30pm\nWhere: The Artery\nCost: $10\nTukutuku are made with various materials such as natural fibres like kiekie and pingao. That are then traditionally dyed with flora and fauna native to Aotearoa. SUMMARY:Rōreka Workshop / Taonga Pūoro - Matariki 2022
DESCRIPTION:Taonga pūoro produce organic sounds viewed as the ancestral language of Aotearoa and the land\, taking the listener and tuned ear into ancient times\, being wrapped up in voices originating from aeons ago.\nCome and share in this amazing immersive wānanga\, made possible by the Haumanu Collective. Lead by two renowned crafters and musicians\, dedicated to the revitalisation and preservation of taonga pūoro.\nTutors: Jo’el Komene and Tāmihana Kātene\nDate: Sunday\, 3rd July\nTime: 10pm – 3pm\nWhere: The Jam Factory\nPrice: $30 \nAll ages (5 – 15 must be accompanied by an adult and be booked into workshop) \n\nThis 5 hour workshop will introduce you to the different families of traditional Māori musical instruments with a discussion about each. Construction techniques and materials\, whakapapa (genealogical links) as well as tikanga (protocols) surrounding traditional performance using taonga pūoro. Demonstrations will embellish this workshop.\nAfter a two-hour kōrero and break for a catered lunch\, participants will spend two hours making a taonga pūoro and learning how to play them with tuition and guidance in the making process and playing techniques. Participants will also be invited to contribute to a group performance using the taonga pūoro they have made and/or playing the Rōreka – Jo’el Komene collection.\n\nJo’el Komene – Ngā Puhi\, Tapuika\, Tainui\nJo’el is a taonga pūoro artist based in Tauranga\, New Zealand. He has assisted in the revival of taonga pūoro having facilitated numerous wānanga exhibited whakairo taonga pūoro (carved instruments) in several exhibitions\, recorded taonga pūoro for a number of organisations including Māori Television\, Māori radio and local establishments; performed live using taonga pūoro in a range of contexts and practised Māori musical traditions in fulfilling his greater goal of assisting in the revival and maintenance of taonga pūoro on marae (Māori meeting places) and appropriately in broader contexts.\n\nTāmihana Kātene – Ngāti Toa Rangatira\, Ngāti Tama\, Ngāti Koata\, Te Taoū – Ngāti Whatua\nFor over 20 years\, Tāmihana has been involved in the reinvigoration of Taonga Pūoro within the Wellington region. As a carver of wood\, stone and bone Tāmihana has spent this time focusing on the study and recreation of traditional Taonga Pūoro\, with the intent of reintroducing and strengthening its use within traditional Māori cultural practices.\nTāmihana has lead and taught many community-based wānanga exploring the creation of Taonga Pūoro\, their associated pūrakau (stories) and their use as musical instruments. Outside of this environment\, he has also frequented Te Kōkī\, The New Zealand School of Music\, as a guest lecturer in Ethomusicology studies and as a teacher of performance\, particularly within Haka\, moteatea and Taonga Pūoro.\nTāmihana’s passion for Tikanga and Te Reo have lead him to the composition of karakia and moteatea\, specifically used to encapsulate and retain the knowledge pertaining to Taonga Pūoro. These resources will serve as a set of tools to ensure that intergenerational learnings will be passed on from our tūpuna\nHerea ngā hana o te Rā ki te tenga o te korokoro.\nMauri Tū\,\nMauri Oro\,\nMauri Ora!
