Jack Lemmon stars as Bud Baxter\, a lowly office drone at a giant insurance firm who looks to scale the corporate ladder by loaning out his apartment to higher-ups for their extramarital assignations. Heartbroken when he discovers that his crush Fran (Shirley MacLaine) is the mistress of his callous boss (Fred MacMurray)\, Bud becomes her unlikely saviour when she attempts suicide from romantic despair. Nursing her back to health in his apartment\, the corporate mouse becomes a lion in love\, fearlessly facing down his bosses even as he can’t quite confess his feelings to Fran.” \n– TIFF Cinematheque \n“When Wilder and Lemmon worked together\, their strongest films brought darkness and delight to the screen with sophistication\, humour and a biting satirical edge. This is their masterpiece\, a wry comment on the vicious world of corporate America\, but with an ending as romantic and beautiful as Hollywood ever mustered.” \n– Hannah Gatward\, British Film Institute

SUMMARY:Tauranga Film Society : “Universal Language”

(2024)\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREVIEWS\n\n“In the Canadian cities of Montreal and Winnipeg\, a futile tension exists between French and English speakers — doubly silly\, since the country is officially bilingual. In his gently satirical Universal Language writer-director Matthew Rankin imagines a rather fanciful solution\, where Farsi is now the region’s dominant tongue. Taking his cues from such Iranian classics as Children of Heaven and The White Balloon\, Rankin mixes the humanism of Majid Majidi\, Jafar Panahi\, et al with his own peculiar brand of comedy\, offering a delightful cross-cultural hybrid designed to celebrate our differences.” \n– Peter Debruge\, Variety \n“Two kids discover a bank note frozen in a block of ice\, which they hope to retrieve to buy their classmates a new pair of glasses. A tour guide brings befuddled visitors on a walking tour of the city’s modest environs. A melancholy man (Rankin\, in an autobiographical role) returns home from Montreal to reunite with his family after many years. Imagining a city in which Farsi is the predominant language\, Rankin’s visually and narratively inventive film was inspired by Iranian films of the 1970s\, frequently humanistic children’s fables\, in this case transferred to a world of beige\, concrete brutalist buildings and increasingly surreal\, Tati-esque humor. Winner of the Directors’ Fortnight Audience Award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.” \n– New York Film Festival 2024\n\n\n\nFrom 2027\, the Tauranga Film Society will meet on Mondays at the Luxe Cinema in Devonport Road. \nFilms are limited to Film Society members. Once you are a member ($120 for the full season or $40 for a 3-film sampler membership) there is no additional cost to see each film.  The 12 month membership period starts at your date of joining.\nFor more info\, contact \nKristine Keir\nEmail: taurangafilmsociety@gmail.com \nThe dates of films are on the  Programme for the Year
