SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Christina Read & Psychologist Dr Mary Grogan
DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday 5th August 2023  11am – 12.30pm\nWhere: Tauranga Art Gallery\nCost: Free admission.  Refreshments provided. \nJoin Artist Christina Read and Psychologist Dr Mary Grogan for an insightful conversation about art and what it is to be a person. \nChristina Read’s work is bright\, playful\, and deeply vulnerable. The UK-born Tāmaki-based artist’s practice spans drawing\, painting\, collage\, textiles\, and sculpture\, all created with a distinctly ‘handmade’ sensibility that reveals the vulnerabilities of being an artist – and a person. Oscillating between fiction and autobiography\, Read’s work explores the construction of selfhood\, giving language and form to the complexities of living. \nRead acknowledges that being a person is hard. Her new commission for Tauranga Art Gallery’s atrium provides a space of goodwill and solace. Sink into the artist’s Cosy Corner beneath the stairs to stop and smell the flowers. Reflect (literally) on what it means to be a person in a new suite of Mirrors and consider the nature of Support Structures in a series of zimmer frame-like hanging mechanisms that physically uplift Read’s work. \nThe artist’s use of text provides an additional layer\, encompassing wordplay and hinting at the pressures of conventional milestones (like marriage\, family\, children…).  Her sculpture A life half lived frankly acknowledges the artist’s age whilst also questioning whether we are living our lives to the fullest.  But what does that really look like?  As an audience\, we bring our own experiences to the work. On a good day\, Read’s work is uplifting. On a not-so-good day it cuts deeper…. \nReserve your seat here

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Sarah Hillary & Gallerist Anna Miles
DESCRIPTION:Toi Tauranga warmly invites you to a morning conversation between Artist and Gallerist\, coinciding with Sarah Hillary’s exhibition: Dolphin Afternoons. \nDolphin Afternoons is a series of intimate\, sometimes private scenes rendered small scale. Composed of interior and exterior tableaux\, this assembly of new and pre-existing dioramas by Tāmaki Makaurau based artist Sarah Hillary offer glimpses of iconic Aotearoa baches and beaches including Anawhata\, Pārāwai and Waihi. Their tiny scale is important. Hilary works as Principal Conservator at Auckland Art Gallery and spends days looking at the surface of paintings through a microscope. Hillary began making her own work in earnest in 2003 when she was in her late forties. Just as her day job sees her deciphering layers of time and discovering new and hidden knowledge\, her own practice encourages close looking too\, evoking a sense of wonder and surprise. \nDolphin Afternoons celebrates the quiet beauty of personal scenes. Honouring cherished memories of friends and family holidays\, Hilary reconstructs these worlds for pleasure\, depicting specific times or places reflected in their detailed décor and furnishings. \nAnna Miles opened her gallery in Tāmaki Makaurau in 2003 and represents jewellers\, ceramic artists and a weaver alongside painters and photographers. \nAnna Miles Gallery \nReserve your seat here \nWhen: Sunday 30 July 2023  at  11am- 12.30pm\nWhere: Tauranga Art Gallery\,\nCost:  Free admission.
