Sustainable Backyards: Rongoa Maori – Basic Plant Identification Traditional Maori Medicine

Gain an understanding of what Rogoa Maori is about.
Explore the backyard of our property in Welcome Bay to identify native plants that are growing there and discuss some of their practical and traditional medicinal usage.  This involves a basic introduction to some Maori cultural principles that are followed for the sustainable practice of Rongoa Maori traditional healing.

Meet the Myrtles – Mystery Myrtle Plant Hunt (Conservation Week)

Scion and the Department of Conservation would like to help you learn about Myrtle rust, a fungal disease that severely attacks plants in the myrtle family including pōhutukawa, mānuka and rātā. It is now in New Zealand.

A member of the Myrtle family may be in your backyard!! Lets learn together our native plants and meet the Myrtles!

Walk through Johnson Reserve and have an expert Scion Research Scientist help you discover the mysteries of what’s threatening the Myrtle plant family.

Discovery for the whole family in the beautifully restored track, planted and maintained by the Johnson Reserve care group in Welcome bay.

Look for our gazebo and the Department of Conservation banner at Waipuna park. Celebrate Conservation Week with prizes, native plant ID and meet the Myrtles.

Andrea’s Sauerkraut Workshop

In this interactive hands on workshop you will learn how to make your very own sauerkraut!!
Come together and learn and socialize with the like-minded.

Together we will grate the cabbages and go through the process step by step. It’s easy for you to do yourself at home afterwards.

You will take home a jar of sauerkraut that you have made and a knowledge of fermenting.

Cost: $49 per person including a jar of your own sauerkraut

Social Dance Classes – Ballroom, Latin, Rock & Roll, New Vogue

From social dancing to competition dancing, there are lots of opportunities for everyone to enjoy dancing.

Beginner dance classes commence four or five times a year for an initial 6 week course at our Tauranga Dance School. These are then continued in blocks of 6 weeks to enable greater proficiency and a wider range of dances to be learnt.

Learn the different styles of dance from the beginners through to competition level. Hugh and Sonia are specialists in the field of Ballroom, Latin American, New Vogue and Rock & Roll dancing.

Kombucha Workshop with Andrea

Come along and learn how to brew your very own healthy gut friendly tonic!! Especially important now in these times of Covid-19 to assure the best Immunity and wellbeing.
Your health will thank you and give you vitality in return.
Spice up your life with the science of Kombucha and it’s many uses.

Learn how to utilise seasonal fruit and add them to your second fermentation, creating an additional twist, using Rongoa Maori and herbs from your garden.

In this 3 hour workshop you will learn how to make kombucha step by step, in a practical non rushed manner.
A great way to connect with like minded people and it’s fun to attend with a friend to share the journey.

If you are a group op people wanting me to hold a workshop at your place, let me know. I am flexible and able to travel ( minimum of 6 people, host will attend free of charge)
PS: We will have frozen plums, brewed Kombucha and crafts to buy in my mobile shop on the day of the event. You are able to pay for these with cash or online payments accepted.

Andrea’s Backyard Apple Cider Vinegar Making Workshop

Come along and learn how to make use of any apple bits you get your hands on and turn this into healthy homemade apple cider vinegar !

You will select your own organic apples and we will prepare our vinegar under the trees out in Nature. I am running several workshops from our backyard in Welcome Bay during this month.

Your course registration of $75 pays for your complete brewing equipment to take home with you and ingredients needed to make 10 litres of apple vinegar. You will gain the skill and confidence to brew on your own afterwards.

Learning together with others is a fun way and it connects us all.

Macramé Jars Workshop

One Day Workshop

This class is aimed at those who have some experience in macrame knotting and now want to practice their skills by making some beautiful macrame covers for jars of various sizes. You need to be familiar with the Square Knot and Double Half Hitch knot as they will be used in all the suggested designs.

Make your Christmas presents early this year.

You can use these beautiful jars as vases or lanterns with candles or fairy lights. You will go home with 1-3 beautifully covered jars which make wonderful presents for family and friends.

Material is additional to the course fee and depends on which jar(s) you choose to make. It ranges from $10 to $20 per jar.

In this 3- hour crochet workshop we will learn the basic steps of crocheting alongside each other. It’s great if you have been crocheting before but not essential.
Come along and give it ago.
Making your own makeup removers is very rewarding, not only the making of them, but to actively do something for our environment.
They make great gifts for your environmentally conscious friends and for yourself.
Knowing how to crochet a circle is the basis of making a little pod or basket, hacky sack, or whatever you fancy. Having made the start will open a new world up for you. A world of endless provocations and opportunities.

Sustainable Backyards: Guided Walk Johnsons Reserve Project

Join us for a guided walk of Johnson Reserve for an explanation of how the Johnson Reserve Care Group has been removing the weeds and how the revegetation has been progressing. See the ongoing work that is being done to restore a valley that was once farmed into one of Tauranga’s most beautiful reserves.

Sustainable Backyards: Living Without a Rubbish Bin

Join Hannah and Liam of The Rubbish Tip for an Introduction into the hows and the whys of reducing household rubbish, and the different ways we can all help create a zero waste world.

Hannah and Liam have been living without a rubbish bin since 2015 and have delivered over 400 talks nationwide about zero waste living.
