DESCRIPTION:University of Waikato – Tauranga and Tompkins Wake present\na special public lecture with Hon Tim Brewer. \nCivilian Oversight of Defence in a Challenging Strategic Environment\nTompkins Wake is proud to sponsor the University of Waikato Public Lecture with Hon Tim Brewer\, recently appointed Inspector-General of Defence. \nIn this timely lecture\, Hon Tim Brewer will explore the importance of civilian oversight of the New Zealand Defence Force\, the legal implications of that oversight\, and what it means in practical terms. \nDrawing on his extensive legal\, judicial and military experience\, he will consider how oversight operates in practice and why it matters for public confidence\, accountability and the rule of law\, placing these issues within the broader context of today’s challenging strategic environment\, where decisions relating to defence\, security and international engagement carry significant legal\, ethical and practical consequences. \nThe lecture will include reflections on real-world examples\, including the sinking of HMNZS Manawanui\, and will examine how independent oversight helps ensure transparency\, responsibility and public trust in matters of national significance. \nHon Tim Brewer brings a rare depth of experience to this discussion. DESCRIPTION:A case study in language ingenuity. \nWith over 130 indigenous languages spoken across its 83 islands\, is Vanuatu the most linguistically diverse nation in the world. Born from contact with European and other Pacific languages\, Bislama is now one of Vanuatu’s official languages.
