Te Aka o Tuwhenua: Māori Land Court Research

Te Ao Mārama (Tauranga City Libraries), in collaboration with Te Aka Mauri (Rotorua Library), presents this exciting and informative two-part lecture.

Sometimes described as “Te Kooti Tango Whenua”, or the land-taking court, the Māori Land Court has a long and chequered past.


Maori Land Court Historical 
Seminar: 10am – 12pm

The first section of this lecture will explore the history of the Court and provide context for the Court’s relationship with Te Arawa.

Māori Land Court Research
Seminar: 1pm – 2pm

The second section will identify the unique, valuable historical resources the Court may hold for researchers of whānau, hapū, and iwi history (whakapapa, waiata, letters, wills—the list goes on).
