Volunteers at McLaren Falls Park
/in Flowers/Shrubs/Trees, Garden Clubs /by Shelley DeanThe society looks after the trees at McLaren Falls Park.
Meetups:
Day: Wednesdays
Time: 12 noon – about 4pm
Place: McLaren Falls Park Information Centre
We meet at the Information centre at noon on Wednesdays with our packed lunches. After lunch and a discussion about what’s on for the afternoon we set to it. Usually no more than three hours in total. We bring our own tools, and plenty of cheerful enthusiasm. The afternoon will be cancelled if the weather looks guaranteed to be wet.
The nature of the work is forever changing and can include planting, identification & GPS plotting location, or nursery work with trees from early February to mid-December.
A volunteer doesn’t have to be knowledgeable about trees, or be a competent gardener, just to be willing to follow instructions. One of our current members has said she loves coming, not just because the park is such a lovely place, but because she learns something every week.

Pastel Painting – Tauranga Society of Artists
/in Art Clubs, Pastels /by Shelley DeanPastel painters love the immediacy of drawing with a rich and painterly colouring power. If you haven’t used them before you may be surprised at how easily the essential techniques can be mastered. Learning to handle the pastels and the attractiveness of the work you can produce is very satisfying.
You are welcome to attend Mary’s sessions and see for yourself the versatility of this medium which is suited to either large, ambitious compositions right down to small quick sketches. The whole pastel process is one of ease and simplicity – no palette to organise, no canvas to prepare, no need for water or turps and no clean-up afterwards.
Mary is passionate about her medium and will welcome you to her sessions to share the pleasure of working with pastels and will show the various types of pastel available, their wide range of colours, subtle hints and textures.

Life Drawing Sessions
/in Drawing, Painting /by Shelley DeanCome along to our Life Drawing bi monthly Life Drawing Session
Life Drawing Session Friday (first and third Friday of the month)
Where: 171a Elizabeth Street West, Tauranga
Koha: $10.00 for Society Members, $15.00 for Guests
Life Drawing, Figure Drawing… the act of drawing a living person.
It’s one of the most challenging and interesting ways to develop your drawing skills. Skills that translate to all aspects of art making.
It’s also a great way to escape into your own world for a little while.
This is an untutored session, however, we won’t leave you completely alone if you are new to it and need a little help getting started. It is a very friendly, mixed level, session and you will be surprised what you can learn and achieve with a little encouragement.
If you are an experienced artist or student a Life Model will give you unlimited inspiration and a chance to experiment with your technique, materials and style. And we all appreciate and are inspired by new approaches.
We always take time for a feedback session before we leave. This is a positive and invaluable part of the session. It is inspiring looking at what worked during the session and why; sometimes the less obvious “works” provide the most interesting insights. There is always something to learn.
Bring your own drawing/painting gear (any media is fine), there is usually sugar paper available for sale at the Art Room. We do have some easels at the rooms, but they are limited. If you have your own please feel free to bring it along.
Please turn up in time to assist with set up, and stay on to assist with pack down. We are a self supporting group and if everyone helps it is very quick and easy.
PS: If you are interested in modelling and are available please feel free to PM me. We love experienced Models, but are happy to use a sprinkling of “new” models… so don’t be reluctant if you haven’t done it before.

Tinkd Makerspace : Repair Café
/in Eco-Friendly, Up-cycling /by Shelley DeanThe perfect opportunity to have broken belongings assessed or repaired is right around the corner.
Tauranga hoarders, tinkerers and holders of broken gadgets can rejoice, as Tauranga’s Repair Café pop up opens up on the last Saturday of each month at 148 Durham Street, Tauranga. Get your objects fixed for free! Volunteers try to repair items destined for landfill. Get your objects fixed for free!
Repair Cafés are described as “free pop-up events” where local people can bring in their “broken or damaged belongings” to local volunteers, who do their best to repair or assess them.
Tauranga is joining the global movement with its own Repair Café with a volunteer driven initiative as part of Tinkd Makerspace.
According to a spokesperson, Repair Cafés aim to reduce waste and overconsumption.
They also encourage and foster the “do it yourself” spirit and strengthen social connections by bringing different members of the community together.
“The purpose of these events is two-fold: to try to change our “throwaway culture” and to bring people in the community together. An added bonus is that it saves people money,” says founder of Tinkd Makerspace, Steven Vincent.
“If their item can be repaired they don’t need to replace it, pay for more expensive repairs elsewhere, or send it to the landfill. If the item can’t be repaired, then at least we’ve tried!
For more information and tickets to the next Repair Café event, visit the Tinkd website.
When: Last Saturday of the month
Time: 9.30am – 11.30am
Where: Tinkd Makerspace, 148 Durham St Tauranga
The organisers are looking for more volunteer repairers with different skill sets to add to the events. It’s free to attend with an item but pre-booking an item is preferred as it allows the organisers to prepare for any repairs.

Life Drawing Sessions
/in Art Clubs, Drawing, Painting /by Shelley DeanCome along to our Life Drawing bi monthly Life Drawing Session
