Sambo Drumming for Beginners
/in Bands, Learn an Instrument /by Shelley DeanGet your rhythm on!
Musical Director. Fabio Camera, along with the whole band, invites beginners to come along and experience the joy of samba drumming. From September 24th, we will be structuring our weekly practices so that beginners will be supported to pick up a drum or percussion instrument and feel the beats of Brazilian Samba.
We’d be thrilled to have new people join the club and grow the band. This introduction needs no more commitment than the course itself, and if you find that samba is the thing for you, you can carry on and join properly after that.
For four consecutive weeks, from 7pm – 8.00pm at our normal practice venue, Mount Maunganui Sports Centre, Cnr Maunganui and Hull Rd. After 8pm, the existing band members will be playing some more complex tracks to keep us gig-ready and you are welcome to keep up with us, but the focus will change in this second half.
Bring earplugs if you have them, but if not these will be provided. $40 for the whole course, but this will be transferred to your full-year fees if you choose to join and continue. Please also bring water. Prepare to enjoy it immensely.
How will the practices play out?
7pm – Arrive to check in and get set up with your instrument of choice.
7.10pm – ready to play.
First hour – Fabio will lead the band in learning and playing some simpler tracks. The pace may be slowed to allow for learning. Experienced band members will be on hand to support beginners.
Second hour – Fabio will focus on existing band members and high-energy tracks. Beginners will be welcome to join in where you feel comfortable, and can revel in the energy and dynamism of the band at full force!
9.00pm – Pack up.
Resources to help your learning.
Samba drumming is primarily learned by doing. We have some videos of the tracks and specific instruments within the tracks. This is not exhaustive, but we do continue to add to it, and for the period of the beginners’ workshop you will have access to this resource. While there is some written description of the tracks, we encourage you to listen, watch and repeat! The group is very supportive and we have a lot of fun. No one will make you feel silly if you blast out a rhythm that still needs some work! We’re right there to help you.
When: Tuesdays at 7pm
Where: Mount Maunganui Sports Centre, Cnr Maunganui and Hull Rd.
Cost: $40 for the whole course
