Never too old to learn new things

The first batch of graduates from Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology’s Bachelor of Creative Industries walked across the stage this week at Holy Trinity Church.

The three-year degree offers majors in Visual Art, Graphic Design, and Fashion Design. And 65-year-old Norah Maclachlan (pictured) is among them, and credits the staff at the institute for helping her achieve her goal.

“Being an older student, I have a problem understanding written word, which was a challenge in itself. But I had a very understanding tutor, who pushed me when I thought I couldn’t do it.”

She’s always sewn and enjoyed craftwork, and after her job was disestablished, she decided to try something new.

“Being an older person made it quite hard to get another job,” says Norah.

“My son was already studying to be a fashion designer, and he suggested I start doing the certificate in fashion at the institute.

“I already knew how to sew, so the biggest challenge was making my own patterns. But that whetted my appetite, and encouraged me to carry on to the bachelor degree.”

Norah says the degree was a bit of a learning curve, but it also allowed her to pick up more skills.

“We did more than just fashion. We worked on the business side, and learned about graphic design and visual arts as well.”

And her ambition now?

“I’m a bigger woman, and short, so what I want to do is create stylish patterns for women with that shape. I’ve tried looking for clothes myself, and they often look like sacks,” laughs Norah.

“What I’m exploring at the moment is my craftwork, so I’m working on showcasing that for a start.”

With a degree under her belt, she no doubt has many more options now. Her advice to people thinking about studying is to have a go, no matter what prior experience you have.

“If you have a passion for art, or a passion for fashion, go for it. It doesn’t matter what age you are, or the challenges you face. It’s worth it in the end.”

Tinkd Makerspace : Repair Café

The perfect opportunity to have broken belongings assessed or repaired is right around the corner.

Tauranga hoarders, tinkerers and holders of broken gadgets can rejoice, as Tauranga’s Repair Café pop up  opens up on the last Saturday of each month at 148 Durham Street, Tauranga. Get your objects fixed for free! Volunteers try to repair items destined for landfill. Get your objects fixed for free!

Repair Cafés are described as “free pop-up events” where local people can bring in their “broken or damaged belongings” to local volunteers, who do their best to repair or assess them.

Tauranga is joining the global movement with its own Repair Café with a volunteer driven initiative as part of Tinkd Makerspace.

According to a spokesperson, Repair Cafés aim to reduce waste and overconsumption.

They also encourage and foster the “do it yourself” spirit and strengthen social connections by bringing different members of the community together.

“The purpose of these events is two-fold: to try to change our “throwaway culture” and to bring people in the community together. An added bonus is that it saves people money,” says founder of Tinkd Makerspace, Steven Vincent.

“If their item can be repaired they don’t need to replace it, pay for more expensive repairs elsewhere, or send it to the landfill. If the item can’t be repaired, then at least we’ve tried!

For more information and tickets to the next Repair Café event, visit the Tinkd website.

When: Last Saturday of the month
Time: 9.30am – 11.30am
Where: Tinkd Makerspace, 148 Durham St Tauranga

The organisers are looking for more volunteer repairers with different skill sets to add to the events. It’s free to attend with an item but pre-booking an item is preferred as it allows the organisers to prepare for any repairs.

Sketch On !!

Urban Sketchers see the world one drawing at a time. Join us as we let our drawings tell a story of our surroundings, the places we live and the places we travel.
The essence of Urban Sketching is to draw on location, indoors or out, and capture what we see from direct observation.
All levels of sketchers are encouraged, from beginner to advanced, using whatever medium you prefer.
Sharing ideas and enjoying our drawing in a social, relaxed community of sketchers is what we are all about.
Please bring your own sketching materials and other items like sunscreen, hat, a seat, water, etc., as required for outdoor sketching. We will meet at a particular location at a specified time and then the choice of what subject to draw is yours. We will usually get together again after about 2 hours to share our work and socialise.
We love to share our work while observing the guidelines outlined in our manifesto.

The course is full of practical step-by-step suggestions to help manage the everyday situations parents face and to create a more enjoyable family life.

Why do a parenting course?

  • Parenting is the most important job adults do.

Weekly morning teas and an end-of-course celebration are included.

The next course starts on 25th February 2026 and runs for 14 weeks

Volunteers at McLaren Falls Park

The society looks after the trees at McLaren Falls Park.

Meetups:
Day: Wednesdays
Time: 12 noon – about 4pm
Place: McLaren Falls Park Information Centre

We meet at the Information centre at noon on Wednesdays with our packed lunches. After lunch and a discussion about what’s on for the afternoon we set to it. Usually no more than three hours in total. We bring our own tools, and plenty of cheerful enthusiasm. The afternoon will be cancelled if the weather looks guaranteed to be wet.

The nature of the work is forever changing and can include planting, identification & GPS plotting location, or nursery work with trees from early February to mid-December.

A volunteer doesn’t have to be knowledgeable about trees, or be a competent gardener, just to be willing to follow instructions. One of our current members has said she loves coming, not just because the park is such a lovely place, but because she learns something every week.

Life Drawing Sessions

Come along to our Life Drawing bi monthly Life Drawing Session
Life Drawing Session Friday (first and third Friday of the month)

Where: 171a Elizabeth Street West, Tauranga
Koha: $10.00 for Society Members, $15.00 for Guests

Life Drawing, Figure Drawing… the act of drawing a living person.
It’s one of the most challenging and interesting ways to develop your drawing skills. Skills that translate to all aspects of art making.
It’s also a great way to escape into your own world for a little while.
This is an untutored session, however, we won’t leave you completely alone if you are new to it and need a little help getting started. It is a very friendly, mixed level, session and you will be surprised what you can learn and achieve with a little encouragement.
If you are an experienced artist or student a Life Model will give you unlimited inspiration and a chance to experiment with your technique, materials and style. And we all appreciate and are inspired by new approaches.
We always take time for a feedback session before we leave. This is a positive and invaluable part of the session. It is inspiring looking at what worked during the session and why; sometimes the less obvious “works” provide the most interesting insights. There is always something to learn.
Bring your own drawing/painting gear (any media is fine), there is usually sugar paper available for sale at the Art Room. We do have some easels at the rooms, but they are limited. If you have your own please feel free to bring it along.
Please turn up in time to assist with set up, and stay on to assist with pack down. We are a self supporting group and if everyone helps it is very quick and easy.

PS:  If you are interested in modelling and are available please feel free to PM me. We love experienced Models, but are happy to use a sprinkling of “new” models… so don’t be reluctant if you haven’t done it before.

Boundaries – A Course for Women

An understanding of the importance forgiveness plays in emotional well-being, and the difference between being a forgiving person and giving people a license to continue hurting you.
The ability to recognise clear boundaries others have set, and when we may have crossed these.

While some time is set aside for participants to share individually this course is not designed to operate as a therapy group.

The course is led by trained and experienced facilitators to create a safe environment for women only.

Pastel Painting – Tauranga Society of Artists

Pastel painters love the immediacy of drawing with a rich and painterly colouring power. If you haven’t used them before you may be surprised at how easily the essential techniques can be mastered. Learning to handle the pastels and the attractiveness of the work you can produce is very satisfying.
You are welcome to attend Mary’s sessions and see for yourself the versatility of this medium which is suited to either large, ambitious compositions right down to small quick sketches. The whole pastel process is one of ease and simplicity – no palette to organise, no canvas to prepare, no need for water or turps and no clean-up afterwards.
Mary is passionate about her medium and will welcome you to her sessions to share the pleasure of working with pastels and will show the various types of pastel available, their wide range of colours, subtle hints and textures.

The course is full of practical step-by-step suggestions to help manage the everyday situations parents face and to create a more enjoyable family life.

Why do a parenting course?

  • Parenting is the most important job adults do.

Skills to become “lovingly direct” in their relationships.
